it all depends.

sometimes thse number are paying homage to a person who what born that year, or a company that was born that year.
sometimes it is in reference to the vintage.
if that is the case then that means that the tobacco was harvested in that year. so a "vintage 2002" has a leaf that they want to brag about that was harvested in 2002.

In the case of RyJ, 1875 is a reference to the year the brand's range was fully established in Cuba, the brand itself was launched in the 1850's and officially registered in 1873.

It usually has some significance for the brand name and sometimes for the vintage of the harvest. Good examples are AJ's 1844 and the Morro Castle which has a 1589 date (castle construction start date)
