OK - I want to have music on the back porch (it's covered, so the only exposure to weather will be temperature changes and humidity), and I don't want to replace my reciever indoors to accomodate two more speakers. The cheapest way to do this, I think, will be to get an inexpensive marine boat radio/cd ($100 - $200) with usb and ipod ports and use my yamaha outdoor speakers.
The problem is the power source. How do I convert this DC device so that it will plug into a 110 outlet?
Any solutions?

You could get a pretty decent shelf system or boombox for the money you would spend on the marine deck and take it inside when youre done outside. Then you wouldnt have to worry about conversion issues.

Look into Sonos. Its a wireless music system. You can tie it into your exsisting system if you want also. Its $400-500 to start but worth it. I do Home Theater installs for a living so if you need any questions answered give me a PM.

I can get a decent marine deck for about $150, & I've already got nice Yamaha outdoor speakers.........nickiam:You could get a pretty decent shelf system or boombox for the money you would spend on the marine deck and take it inside when youre done outside. I'm too cheap for that.....I would prefer to upgrade my home theatre reciever instead.......but I like this challenge of the marine deck, and the price tag........I'm too cheap for my own good.......Vision:Look into Sonos. Maybe I'm not understanding this correctly....but you want to add more speakers/zones to the existing system?
And you have a receiver/speakers already....
Would a "Speaker Selector" do the trick ... maybe ? something like this product??
(And doesn't Brett (Irishman) do home theater installs, or am I imagining that...if so, maybe shoot him a PM, I'm sure he'd help.) -
OK, gonna show how dumb I am; what does the speaker selector do? Does it attach to your existing reciever, and provide more speaker jacks? I have a Yamaha 5.1 reciever, & there isn't anyplace to attach my two outdoor speakers (I had a rocketfish contraption that sent a wireless signal to a device that my outdoor speakers were hooked into, but it died).

Is there just an AB switch on the receiver ? Most have them. What model yamaha is it?

There are only enough audio jacks for the "surround sound" speakers, and I need two more for the outdoor speakers & I hate spending money. This unit would be perfect - an outdoor receiver for a spa under $90 - the only problem is plugging it into a 110 outlet.

ok.....so after some digging, it seems like the speaker selector hooks right up to your receiver's speaker terminals. as long as you're not trying to crank the volume to "11" and run all the speakers at once, you should be fine.jgibv:

That marine radio you found looks good too - the previous owners of our last house had installed one like that, it worked well - I'm sure you could find an A/C adapter for it. -

I didn't read every link provided, but for a supply you can order any of the multitude of old computer server rack systems off of ebay. I bought 1 for $25 a year ago, and use it as a 12vdc supply to charge my radio controlled batteries. The most common and cheapest model will put out 575watts at 12vdc. That is much higher than almost every car / marine stereo currently made, and you might be able to put a small sub amp in it as well.
To make them work you just need to figure out which of the 12 pins to connect. Mine is 6-8-10 and it delivers full power. Different brands will have different pin outputs. Also there was a company that was selling them already fabbed up for $75 MaxAmps or someone.

I've already got a very nice pair of Yamaha outdoor speakers. I'll use that i-phone docking station plugged into an older Yamaha receiver, and run the speaker wires indoors to the receiver. The phone stays charged while in use, and the dock has a remote. The receiver has an a/b switch on it so I can have stereo indoors and outdoors that way. Problem solved; $130.
