Help with a dvd player

Everyone, Registered Users Posts: 2,647
We have a dvd/vcr player that now skips on movies that it didnt before or wont play them at all. The discs are fine, even does it with new dvd's.
Has the happened to anyone? Any ideas on how to fix it. I dont want to spend money on a new one.

Have you run a DVD cleaning disk ?

Is there any odd noise that goes along with it? When my last one started dying there was a clicking that preceded a freeze or skip.

No noise that we can hear. It just starts skipping. Or wont run it at all.
Nope, I haven't tried a cleaning disk. Never knew about such a thing.

They are not expensive and if you only have to use it once it is a good investment.

Are you getting an error message or just nothing?

Unfortunately, after a certain amount of time most DVD players begin to exhibit this behavior, even if they're not used for a long time. It usually means that dust or something is getting into the laser thingamabob that reads the disk. This occurs naturally. There are kits that are designed to "clean" the lasers. I've tried several brands and none of them ever helped.

You could try one of these kits, but for the price you'd pay for them you'd nearly be halfway to the price of a new DVD player. I see them regularly for $30-$40 or so because Blu-ray players are phasing them out.

It tries to play it for a minute, then a red triangle pops up on the screen and says "disk error".
Its more than 7 years old, so I may just have to bite the bullet and buy a new one.

Yep, time to do the "how much is it worth to me to take the time to fix it" vs. new one. Even Blu-rays are pretty cheap these days.

Yup, just grab a Blu-Ray. They are rather cheap now-a-days. You won't regret it

There is also a DVD cleaning gizmo and mine has saved more then one good movie DVD. Also fairly cheap...I think mine was $29.99. A very good investment.

We just try and watch the one out of five disks that it decides to play. I thought that I would have work over the spring break but they cancelled me. Which figures. So no money in the budget for anything right now.
