I know virtually nothing about rum, other than the occasional Bacardi/Coke. Any advice on premium rum, especially rum that goes with a fine cigar?

I don't either. But I hear that Zaya is a good one.

Zaya is fantastic rum, and can't be beat for the money aside from Ron Zacapa Centenario. The Goslings family reserve is great as well, but at about double the price.

Is the Gosling Family reserve anything like Gosling Black Seal? I have been addicted to Black Seal / Dark n' Stormy's since I went to Bermuda several years ago. I tell ya, drinking those along with a nice RyJ ISOM while overlooking Hamilton Bay was like dying and going to heaven!

To get back on subject, some of the Appleton aged rums are pretty nice, although Appleton makes some cheaper not too good rums as well in my experience.

The Goslings black seal is a great mixer for run and coke or dark n' stormys and Bermuda was where I first tried Goslings as well. The family reserve is more of a sipping rum. It's well aged, though I don't know exactly how long, and best served neat or over one or two ice cubes. So, in short, no it's not like the black seal. It's a much better, aged rum.

Haven't tried the Appleton estate or aged rums yet but may put those on my list in the near future.

Captain Morgans Private Stock is all I need in a rum. Love that stuff and it's not real expensive. You shouldn't pay more than $22 for a bottle.

Private stock is an ok rum and really not bad for the money but it's still more of a mixer than a sipping rum. And who's to say how much you should spend on a bottle? I'm sure you've spent more than $4 on an aged cigar. It's the same idea. While I'll admit, some rums are a tad overpriced for the quality that you get. Just like good tequila, bourbon, scotch, cognac, wine, etc, rum mellows and improves to a nice smooth sipping drink when it's been aged.

Just for an experiment, go buy a bottle of unaged, blanco, bacardi rum, a bottle of captain's private stock and a bottle of Zaya or Zacapa and try sipping all of them neat. Then tell me which one is worth spending the extra money. As with cigars, I understand, it's all a matter of taste. I just happen to prefer a good, aged rum, neat and I'm willing to shell out some extra dough to get something I'm going to enjoy. Whether it's $30 or $130. I can't justify spending hundreds of dollars on a bottle, but if I had the means, I would.

Yes. This is what I meant. I've been really bad a wording my posts lately and have had a lot of spainin to do! And I don't purchase a liquor unless I plan on sipping on it. The only time I mix is with tequila. I love sipping a glass of Private Stock. But to each his own.

Sorry, hope I didn't come off hostile and I completely apologize if I did. Like I said, private stock isn't bad, and the first time I tried the stuff, I loved it. I'd say give zaya or zacapa a try and you'll be hooked.

As for Ta-kill-ya, unless you get really good tequila, it's a tough one to sip. However, Don Julio Anejo Real, as expensive as it is, is more like sipping a scotch than a tequila. Smooth, oaky, sweet and mellow without that distinct tequila bite. Just a bit more than I'd like to spend on a bottle of tequila at almost $400 a pop around here.

I've tried it but didn't like it very much. Of course I grew up drinking Capt. & Coke listening to the porn music on their site.

Rum and Tonic can be good. I had some Zaya and Tonic at the cigar event I went to last Tuesday and it was really good. Was surprised how good it was actually. Mostly rum and just a splash of tonic. Very tastey!

Hmmm...rum and tonic? Never thought of that, but I'm not sure it'll be at the top of my try-list.

Spiced Rum and Mountain Dew Code Red. I can think of a lot of other things I'd rather drink, but if you don't mind the sweetness, it's allright. It certainly fits the easy requirement!

Different rums for different sticks. Alex wrote a really good article on rum/cigar pairings a few months ago. If you hunt around on the site I'm sure you could probably find it. That would be a good place to start.

Mojitos are another popular one, but that takes some practice to get right. Though I'm not normally a mixed drink kind of guy, I just had one of these made by Jo3zer last weekend and it was excellent. He's got that one down.

Aside from what Rob said (Zaya and Zacapa) I like Cruzan Single Barrel (good to sip, very good to mix with) and Montecristo 12 year old. Montecristo also makes a spiced rum and it goes great with Dr. Pepper. A less expensive spiced rum is Kilo Kai; I like it because it has a touch of vanilla in the finish. Another rum that Rob has mentioned before, that I still cannot find, in the Plantation Reserve, ask him about it.
