GALVESTON — A beach jogger discovered a large burlap sack Monday morning, which police said contained 55 pounds of cocaine.
The man was jogging along Indian Beach, which is near De Vaca Lane on the island’s West End, about 9:30 a.m. when he found the package at the water’s edge, Galveston police Capt. Jeff Heyse said.
Heyse declined to reveal the name of the jogger who found the large burlap sack, saying police wanted to allow him to remain anonymous.
“He couldn’t open the package on the beach, due to the way it was tied,” Heyse said. “He brought it back to his residence, cut the bag open and observed the flat brick inside.”
The jogger, having seen similar packages on television and in movies, immediately suspected it contained narcotics and called the police, Heyse said.
“We recovered what appears to be approximately 25 kilos of cocaine,” Heyse said. “Each brick weighing 2.2 pounds.”
Because the package still was partially in the water, Heyse suspected someone possibly dropped it from a boat.
“This is not the first time cocaine ... has washed up on the beach like this,” Heyse said.
With the help of federal authorities, police are investigating the source, Heyse said.
“When cocaine comes like this, it didn’t come from the states,” Heyse said. “It came from south of the border. So, our jurisdiction is limited of what we can do with it.”
Federal authorities could analyze the product to try to determine its origin, Heyse said. """""" i think id lay off the jogging for awhile, lol ,,,///// ////,,
