Hi everyone, I'm a collector of old, vintage cigar boxes.  Mostly old wooden boxes that are dated with a tax paid stamp from any of the states.  I was looking through ebay today and found a great box from 1869 and was wondering if anyone here would have any info on it, if the brand is recognizable to you, ect.  Its very interesting because of General Grant and that it is from Massachusetts.  Thanks everyone, happy 4th!

Cool, Jakey. I don't know anything about the brand, but "Oscuro Colorado 100" is, I believe, telling you that the cigars would have been a very dark brown, almost black color ("Oscuro"), and were made with a wrapper leaf from Colorado. The "100" could be some kind of size indicator.

Thanks for the reply, thats very cool about the wrapper leaf being from Colorado.  I probably should have known Oscuro meant that, I'm almost embarrased, but I haven't come across any that I noticed.  Thanks for the info!!!  I apprecaite it!

Well, going by the writing on the box, it is Cuban in origin, as noted by the words "de la Vuelta Abajo" Vuelta Abajo being one of the famed tobacco growing areas of Cuba. Oh, and the word "Habana" goes to further that point. I am wondering if this was perhaps a cigar commissioned for Gen. Grant, as the box bears his name and face. I don't know though, I'm just kinda thinking out loud here. In any event, this looks to be a cool collector's item.

It is definitely Cuban and the words Oscuro Colorado refer to the wrapper. It is a reddish wrapper similar to a Partagas Rosado. Oscuro Colorado is spanish for obscure red color.
