Is no hard to understand?

Why is it when people ask you a question, sometimes they give you that weird look and ask, "What do you mean no?"
Is no that complicated to figure out?
Is it that hard of a word to understand?
Is there some other definitions of no that I don't know about?

Are you going to have that truck done tonight?
No.
What do you mean no?
I mean the opposite of yes. If I'd have meant yes, I think I would have said yes. And I didn't say maybe.
You will have that truck done tonight.
No.
What do you mean no?
Didn't we just cover this?

What do you mean no? Why not? Didn't you ask them why?
No, I didn't ask them. Unlike you, I felt that no was a sufficient answer that didn't need clarification.
