My other thought on this is, why is the media trying to down play the connection to Islamic extremism in this case?

Well fellow students and faculty also heard him say that insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan were justified in planting roadside bombs and he tried to contact terror organizations by email. I'm not saying we can say he "is" an Islamic terrorist, but to avoid that topic entirely is also wrong.
