Looks great. Does it use the savage action? If so how does it go in?

Very slick!!

Nothing new on the build this week, still waiting on my chassis.
I did help with a ELR (extended long rang) shoot this weekend an hour east of me this last weekend. Had a great time spotting hits from the guys that were there. The morning of the first day was check zero at 100 on paper, then moved out to 7, 8, 9, and 1000 Yards.
The first board is 100 yards, then up on top of the ridge is the 1000 yard target (white square).
The afternoon on the first day we moved back from that position 1000 yards and shot targets at 1200, 1500, 1700, 1800, and 2000 Yards. My camera on my I phone would pick them up).
Next morning we moved to a different location to shoot, changing the wind direction to get different shot information. We scored the morning with 4 shots per person at 1000, 1100, 1250, 1500, 1600, 1750, 2000, and 2250 yards. The best guy had 20 impacts out of 32.
That after noon was a game changer, the wind picked up. We had a gusting wind from the north that was 10 to 15mph, and the sun was starting to come into play as it dropped towards the targets. They shot a second string of 4 shots each, with the winner having impacted 11 targets.
All in all it was a great weekend, even if I didn't get to pull a trigger.
What did I learn from this weekend?? Wind sucks......... -
Good article on last weekends long range shoot.

Damn that looks like fun. Living in NJ, well... yeah, I'm not going to see a range like this unless I move.firetruckguy:Nothing new on the build this week, still waiting on my chassis.

Ok, there isn't an actual AR thread so figured I'd bump this. So for Christmas, I am gonna get an AR. Really just want something for plinking, protection, and of course zombies. My father has built a few and he's recommending that I start by buying the complete lower at PSA for like 149$. Then I could research and get what ever upper that I want later. I was curious as to your opinions and to any other websites you recommend. Thanks in advance!

Not a fan of AR's. In April 1967 in Vietnam we turned in our M-14's and got issued M-16's. We got the early bad ones. A lot of Marines died because of those M-16's. I know the improvements have solved the problems that plauged the first ones. We are the sum of our parts, i can never trust those rifles. I now hunt deer with a flintlock, go figure.

It really depends on what your budget for the project is. I don't have any PSA lowers but I have used several barrels that I've purchased from them. I've had good luck with the cold hammer forged (CHF) barrels.mmccartneydc:Ok, there isn't an actual AR thread so figured I'd bump this. So for Christmas, I am gonna get an AR. Most all lowers are built mil-spec, so it is your choice as to which roll mark and finish you like best. I've had great performance from AGP Arms, LAR, Mega, Stag, Superior Arms , All Star Tactical, and Del-Ton as far as lowers go. Some will have a rougher phosphate finish and others will have a smoother Teflon finish. You will want to pay attention to that when attempting to match up an upper to lower.
I would recommend different trigger than the stock one. ALG makes some decent triggers for the price...Rock River Arms NM 2 stage is nice for around $100. There are nicer ones but they start at around $280.
I would recommend a free float handguard. They will allow for more versatility and improved accuracy...IMHO.
Good luck and have fun!!! -
Awesome info buds, thx for the PM!

I kinda fell off the face of the earth for a few weeks. Build is at the gunsmith, should be back first part of Feb.

that thing is nasty!jbohon:
Ah crap. That website is going to cost me money. If my wife calls you, well, just best not to answer the phone... lolfiretruckguy:
I sent my old bolt body to Sharp Shooters Supply, and they did the fluting. Sent it on a Thursday and had it back the following Wednesday. I think they charged me 57.50$ with return shipping. They will also color the flutes with about any color you want.jbohon:
Oh man that is beautiful! Where did you find that one? I'd looked into doing a Rem700 build once and thought about a spiral fluted bolt but I'd never seen one like that!firetruckguy:
Thanks for the info! -
Hays! good to see you bro!Hays:

Well, slow goes the build. I figured it would........
I sent the gun to the smith and should here something from them this month. While that was going on, I was able to find an purchase a scope and a set of rings..
Scope is a Burris XTRII 5-25, was able to pic it up at a 33% discount.
The rings will be here in a few days, but got them half price. I don't know if I posted a picture of the chassis......
Once the smith gets the rifle finished I have a guy painting it Kryptek Typhon pattern. Should look killer. -

I got him 4th season about 1:30 hours from my house up the Poudre river. -18 when I crawled out of the truck and walked a mile back into the woods. There was about 6 inches of snow that came the day before, helped get the elk moving. I shot him at 8:00AMish and I was back at the truck by 10 to go get my dad and the 4 wheeler to get him out. My dad and I quartered him and had him out to the truck by 5:30PM, that was so dang work.
Next year I may wait for a bigger bull to walk by, but I was tickled to get him and get out of the cold...... -
There is so much good stuff in this thread!! Congrats on the elk!!!
-
Awesome pics bud, glad you posted those up. The chassis and scope look killer man can't wait to see this out together!

Curious what grain/caliber did you get him with, distance?? Yea when I saw the snow I knew it was gonna be a long day,,haha,, Keeps the meat cool though!! Did you have to chain up the four wheeler? I guess a sled would of came in handy.
BTW the scope is bad azz -
I know he got him with his .300 Win-Mag, Rudy and I am pretty sure he was using Nosler bullets. Forget the name of the series but had the plastic tips on them if memory serves correct. He had quartered it then the next day him and I took it to the processing plant. The Kid:Curious what grain/caliber did you get him with, distance?? 275 yards, slight down hill. The area I hunted was north of Hwy 14 called eggers canyon. Its federal land that pretty easy to get back in a mile, then it goes strait up. I didn't have to chain up the 4 wheeler, there is a old road that goes a half mile back, then a pretty nice trail to the valley. I do need to go next summer and "prune" some evergreens, it will make next years hunt a lot better. The Kid:Curious what grain/caliber did you get him with, distance?? My hunting rifle is a Browning X bolt long range hunter. 26" barrel in 300WinMag. I hand load Nosler 180gr Accubonds with H4350. Im getting just shy of 3000 fps, awesome punch on big boned game. I hit him in the back right above the haunches first shot, then through the lungs on the second, he didn't go far.
